Fieldtrip

Interested in learning about the acquisition and analysis of remotely sensed data – while enjoying some fresh mountain air? Join us for a one-day field trip to Les Diablerets, a scenic town in the heart of the Alpes Vaudoises. 

The field trip will be split into two parts: 

We will travel as a group from Lausanne to Les Diablerets, where we will walk to Creux de Champ (approx. 2 km), to take in the panoramic views and make observations related to natural hazards (e.g., rockfalls, landslides, and rock avalanches) and geological structures (e.g., folds and faults). We will discuss the practical considerations of planning and conducting a terrestrial LiDAR scan from this site, or nearby locations to generate 3D point clouds, which can be integrated with other publicly available datasets (e.g., digital elevation models and maps) for further analysis. 

After a picnic lunch, we will spend the afternoon indoors at Hôtel les Sources, where participants will work with pre-prepared 3D datasets from Creux de Champs. Participants will team up around different scientific themes (e.g., structural geology, natural hazards) to explore, interpret, and analyze the data. Beginners can learn directly from more experienced users, while advanced participants can share techniques and discuss best practices. We will return to Lausanne at the end of the afternoon. 

• The field trip starts at 8:30 at the University of Lausanne (Géopolis) 

• Transportation will be provided using University of Lausanne vehicles 

• Picnic lunch is included 

• Please bring your own laptop (and ideally a mouse) for the afternoon session 

• We will arrive back at the University of Lausanne at approximately 17:30
